As you may know, today marks the first day of fasting for Muslims around the world. This month we refrain from food and drink during the daylight hours. Yes, we are hungry. Yes, we are thirsty, tired, and if you’re anything like me suffering from severe caffeine withdrawal. ( I would easily be on my third cup by now.)
But in spite of these things, this is our favorite time of the year. This is the time of the year when we really focus on making a spiritual improvements within ourselves and our religion.
During this month, we are celebrating the revolution of the Holy Quran. But we are also looking inwards at ourselves. We focus on making changes like making more prayers, reading more Quran, or giving more charity.
In past years, every Ramadan I set a ton of goals to complete during the month and fall short. So this month I want to set one goal at a time, and if I complete that then move on to a new one. This month I want to focus on reading and memorizing Quran.
The sense of unity you feel is my favorite thing about Islam. You spend your days with fasting with billions of other people who are also fasting. The fact that this one portion of Islam brings together so many Muslims across the world is so beautiful to me.
To all my fellow Muslims out there what are some of your goals this month?
